It's a BIG world...Fish in it!

2 Minute Read

"A wise person once told me that you are the average of the seven people you surround yourself with. At first, this seemed like something out of one of those ‘guru’ books, but the more I thought about it, the more I knew this person was right. I was surrounding myself with people who depended upon me to show them the way; people who were seeking my approval and guidance. So I asked myself, “What now?” What I decided has not only helped reduce stress, but is changing my life for the better.

You should examine your life, take a look at the people around you and those that you choose to associate with regularly. Are there people that are dragging you down? Are there others that have potential, but just aren’t quite there yet? Examining those that contribute to your life and happiness is not an easy task, but once done, you will end up with two groups: the keepers and the throw-backs.

"Reduce stress. Take a look around and if you don’t like what you see, maybe it’s time to go fishing!"

The Keepers

Keepers are people who you will benefit from keeping in your life; those who challenge you, can teach you new things, and offer different perspectives. These are your big fish. While some may still depend on you at first, you have to make the decision to help them grow and become a leader. Whether they are friends, co-workers or employees, you recognize the potential that they bring to the table.

The Throw-Backs

Throw-Backs are people who are currently contributing to your life and maybe even the workplace who may be dragging you down. For some reason or another, they don’t make you strive to be better. If this is a friendship, maybe it’s time to throw them back… And if it is a business relationship, maybe it’s time to examine what they are really bringing forth for the company. If the fish is too small to keep, throw it back.

This world is full of fish; really big fish.

Why are you still settling for mediocre? What I am saying here is that your friends should make you better. Your employees and/or co-workers should make your company better. If they don’t, I’d say there’s a problem. Reduce stress. Take a look around and if you don’t like what you see, maybe it’s time to go fishing![bctt tweet="This world is full of fish; really big fish.
