Who Is Responsible For Your Career Development?

Hey, It’s Courtney. And I just have one simple question for you today, who do you think is responsible for your career development? There are all kinds of studies done on reasons why people leave their jobs. In almost every single study one of the top reasons is: for lack of career development. So, you might be asking yourself, “Well who is responsible for my career development?”
Research done by EdAssist and The University of Phoenix looked into this very question. Most [74%] workers believe that the company is responsible for their career development. But on the other hand, most managers [98%] believe that the employee is in charge of mapping out their career and planning their own career development. So, which is it?
Well, we believe it’s both. You have to want to grow and develop, and your company has to help you get there. You have to take the initiative and have a meeting with your manager and decide what kind of goals you want to set and how you want to get there. And your company has to show you support in doing that. The most important piece of this is that you have to decide your own goals. You have to want to get better as a person, and you want to grow and develop in your career. And your company has to help you get there. So, it all starts with you.
So, let’s break this down a little bit more. How are you going to chart this path? First, figure out where you want to go. Do you like the position that you’re currently in? Are you just wanting to learn a new skill or just grow a little bit in that department? Or are you looking for something completely new in the company? Speak with your manager and let them know kinda what you’re thinking. They might have insight into the company that you don’t even realize at this point.
Next, set some goals. They can start out small by just learning a new simple skill and they can grow within time. But create an action plan and a timeline so you know where your going. Short and long term goals are both important and valuable in the growth and development of yourself.
Next, it’s okay to ask for help or advice. So, reach out to people who are already on the path that you want to be on. Do they have any advice that they didn’t know when they were going through the process? Could they give you a few tips to make it a little easier? Just talk with them, maybe you’ll learn something new, or maybe you’ll learn something you weren’t even considering when starting this new skill or goal.
What’s important is that you create a plan and stick to it. When you do something daily eventually it becomes a habit and then you develop a new skill. But it all starts with you. So, what are you going to do?
