Are you taking advantage of Labor Day?
2 Minute ReadWhen most people hear Labor Day is coming, they think, “WOO HOO! Three Day Weekend!” But do you really know what the day is for? Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and it’s dedicated to the achievements of American workers. “It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made” to make our country a better place.Labor Day is about so much more than a 3 day weekend. It’s a day to recognize all American workers. That’s you, reading this blog. That’s upper management directing teams of people. It’s the people working on the shop floor. That’s the individuals running the machines at the plant. That’s the people developing software, the cashiers at the bank, the guys running construction projects, the person who answers the phones at your office; and yes, even me, the one writing this article.Without each of us doing what we do every single day, things would be more difficult for someone else. We all work hard every day to make our country better. When Labor Day was first created in 1887, there was a large celebration every year that even included a parade! It didn’t take long for all the states to adopt the holiday. The point I’m trying to make here is this: Is it possible that after all these years, we have started taking advantage of the holiday? Now, we’re not saying we need to have a parade. But when was the last time you recognized a star performer in honor of Labor Day? When was the last time you celebrated the contributions and achievements of a fellow coworker or employee? When was the last time you gave yourself a pat on the back? Labor Day is more than just a three day weekend…
"Let us realize that the privilege to work is a gift, that the power to work is a blessing, that the love of work is a success." ~David O. McKay
This Labor Day, don’t just take your time off and call it good. Think about those in your work-world that have done something to make your life easier. Think about those who are still working over the holiday weekend. Thank them, and make sure you aren’t taking your people for granted. For more information about the history of Labor Day, click here!Want else can you do to show your team that you appreciate them?
