2 Minute ReadHow many articles have you read by now about setting goals and New Year’s resolutions? “They need to be realistic. Need to be achievable. They need to inspire you.” Yep, we get it. They need to be all of those things. And it feels amazing to set goals; to get yourself back on track. But did you know that U.S. News reports that 80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February? In ONE short month, the majority of us have stopped working toward our goal. 53% of people last year said their goal was to save money*. 45% set a goal to lose weight. And 80% of them failed. Maybe we should all just accept that we’re going to be broke and overweight. (Well about half of us, anyway.)It’s safe to say the odds are stacked against us. But why do they have to be? Why can’t we change our odds? All we have to do is take action.

"Nothing is going to happen if you don’t simply take action!"

So we’re not going to talk to you about S.M.A.R.T. goals; not this time. We’re not going to talk about what’s realistic and what’s not. By this point, you’ve already done that. You’ve considered what’s important and made a decision. Now, it’s time to get to work.Take a look at the goal (or goals) that you set. Then get started by asking yourself three questions:

Can you break it down?

Let’s say your goal is to lose 40 pounds by December. Great goal. But it can seem like a lot, and for some, this is an excuse to just give up. Could you have 4 small goals instead of 1 big one? Instead, your first goal could be to lose 10 pounds by the end of March. Then 10 more pounds by the end of June, and so on…

What are your action steps?

Same goal, but now, what are you going to do with it? We all know you can’t just magically lose 10 pounds by the end of March. Define the specific action steps that you’ll take. For example, “I will work out for at least 30 minutes four days per week.”

Who will hold you accountable?

Make sure you tell someone about your goal, whether it be a spouse, a friend, or a co-worker. Set the expectation that you are going to accomplish it, and ask them to hold you accountable to what you say you will do.It doesn’t have to be complicated at all. We all have goals, and most people sometimes struggle to meet their goals or stay on track. You can write goals to your heart’s content. You can buy a new planner, put them in there, and feel great about it.
